Cell Phones In the Class: A Major Distraction

Hear is a silly paper I farted out for stupid Foundations of Academic Writing class. So give a short read and tell me if you agree!

Cell Phones In the Class: A Major Distraction
By Derrick O’Toole

Ever since cell phones were first released to the public in 1973,[1] they have ushered in a wave of global connectivity.  Cell phones have allowed people to remain in contact practically wherever they are in the world. They have also produced a new breed of business moguls, able to manage anything from the largest corporations to the smallest upstart entrepreneurial venture. Cell phones have also brought a change to parenting methods, allowing parents to wirelessly contact their offspring, and always know where they are and what they are doing. However in the class room, cell phones turn from man’s newest best friend to a prime distraction method; therefore cell phones should not be allowed in classrooms.

When a student is in class, their primary focus should always be upon the lesson at hand and the information that is being taught by the educator. The primary reason for over twelve years of regulated education is to teach youth how to be a successful part of society once they enter it fully. However, when a cell phone is introduced, the student can at any moment shift focus to that new text or a website.  Also when the cell phone goes off in class and is not on vibrate, the other students around the phone that is going off are also distracted and also will have diminished academic success.

In conclusion, the cellphone since its inception has brought a new age of telecommunications and allowed unparalleled communication across the world. However, cell phones in the classroom are a distraction not only to the individual using it but also to anyone within the vicinity when it goes off. Therefore, cell phones should not be allowed in classrooms.

Cell Phones aren't allowed in most classrooms, but you do make a great point over all.

good point.. but it needs to be implemented in young minds that education is way greater than a stupid gossip text..

if students had the self discipline to not text about random stuff that has no relevance to the class it would be a lot easier to push.

I hate when people are using cell phones in class and not paying attention to anything, then they ask for notes. I tell them to kick rocks.

Me in a nutshell sadly. Even at work I probably spend more time on facebook and twitter despite them being blocked on our network - thanks to my phone.

I agree. I don't see why people have to be connected to their phone 24/7.
