RIP Irvin Kershner

Irvin Kershner, the journeyman filmmaker who was hand-picked by George Lucas to direct the first Star Wars sequel, has passed away following a long illness.
For a man whose career dated back to the mid-1950s, it must've been odd for Kershner to be known for just one film. But when that film is Star Wars: Episode V—The Empire Strikes Back, it's probably not so bad. With films like the Sean Connery romantic comedyA Fine Madness (1966) and Richard Harris' The Return of a Man Called Horse (1976) under his belt, the one-time still photographer signed on to Empire with a very real sense of responsibility. As he told Vanity Fair just last month:
"I wanted very much for the film to succeed because I knew that George was spending his own money on it. I think the critics felt that they were going to see an extension of Star Wars. In other words, they wanted another Star Wars. I decided that the potential was much greater than a rerun of Star Wars. When I finally accepted the assignment, I knew that it was going to be a dark film, with more depth to the characters than in the first film. It took a few years for the critics to catch up with the film and to see it as a fairy tale rather than a comic book."
And dark it was. In a very real way, The Empire Strikes Back was the film that introduced an entire generation of children to the concept of tragedy. The same kids for whom Star Wars was an indoctrination to the power of cinema and the wonder of science fiction would learn that, sometimes, stories don't end well for the hero. That the bad guy, if he's got his mojo working, can steal the day—and the hero's hand in the process. That, occasionally, the only thing you can do is stare off into the stars and hope that tomorrow will be better than today.
Empire didn't really open the doors for Kershner's career in the way it should have, given that it made $200 million in its initial 1980 release. He would work with Connery again on the Bond-ish outingNever Say Never Again and direct the poorly received RoboCop II. His last credit was an episode ofSeaQuest 2032 in 1993.
But given that Kershner played a crucial role in delivering the best installment of the most beloved saga of all time, his legacy will endure.

we'll dig through mountain sides to find what's deep inside

you can help out all your friends in need
but the friends you help need everything
what you need, what you need
i've got everything you need
the friends you help need everything
what you need, what you need

Chess playing robot

When I was younger I used to play plenty of chess. I wasnt any grand master but I had a firm grasp on the game and used to do quite well against my class mates. However when I saw this this morning I knew that it was my goal to defeat this chess playing robot.

filming for min

wow a long filming day today...filming with 16mm bolex is a challenge yet when the shot comes together its definitely worth most of the heartache.

Cinema History Class

Every Tuesday and Thursday i have Cinema History. Its a pretty good class where we get to watch a bunch of the classic golden age and pre golden age films. Today we watched the ending of Queen Christina. INFO HERE. And i gotta say up until this point in this class the movies watched have been interested but they havn't really connected with me until this one. I really enjoyed Queen Christina as just a classic good old time movie. I would suggest anyone go out and watch it if possible.

Hide and seek tag

"some times we play hide and seek tag...ill be cooking and Petra will come running around the corner look at me and run away. Ill say "i know this game" so i ran out of the kitchen... and ran into the bathroom. I waited and then Petra came and found me..but sometimes i scare her jump out unexpectedly but sometimes she does that to me.. she will come in and out and run away. Me and my cat play hide and seek tag....."

Thats what Jess just said.

Learning about school

Today is monday. Which for me means school. Btw those shows i watched last night actually effected my dreams this past night...just shows how much tv can influence yall.

Traveling through time

I truly wish id been born in the future. i watched Into the universe with Steven Hawking...one episode which i just saw dealt with time travel. He believes that if we can have a space ship traveling at close to the speed of light time slows down to prevent you from going faster than the speed of light therefore making you travel through time.....damn even just saying that hurts my head

the fact that i like ice cream

Im not going to lie...I absolutely love ice cream. there is a store in london called the ice cream factory where you can get a ten pound tub of ice cream for only ten bucks! And they have mish-mash flavors in these tubs so its half one and half another...some just totally random...if ever you are in london i suggest that you check it out for their sick deals

I love ratatat

Due Date

Last night i went to see due date.
Thats where the good news ends.
Due date has the possibility to be a fantastic movie, with it having several of the key elements of the hangover. However all these elements seem to be significantly less fun. Robbert and Zack had some funny quips but most of them id already seen in the trailer and tv spots which made them not make crack more than a smile. There are some pleasant moments such as when the dog gets spit on and the fight that ensues. I went into this expecting a zach galifianakis roller coaster..and didnt get that at all. I give it a six out of ten

Seven Saturdays..check them out

Mulholland Drive, malt scotch, Edinburgh Scotland and Christmas trees may not seem like they have a lot in common, but in the case of Jonathan D. Haskell, orchestrator and multi-instrumentalist for the band, Seven Saturdays, they are the landscape for his cinematic orchestra.

A native Angeleno, Jonathan D. Haskell has spent years working and re-working the subtle melodic nuances that have become the headphone-centric Seven Saturdays. Conceived walking the cobblestone streets of Edinburgh, Haskell accepted his inescapable fate of never leaving Los Angeles and his impending return. With that, Seven Saturdays embody his love / hate relationship with said city.

“I became more interested in how music made me feel and became a bit more selfish in the type of sounds I wanted to record. I mostly listen to music in my car, and the sounds that moved me the most occurred late at night while driving around the steep slopes and sharp curves of Mulholland Drive. There’s nothing like that winding road at midnight… the ebb and flow of swirling tones pouring out from all angles leaves you with a renewed sense of focus and direction.”

Seven Saturdays is a direct result of this renewed energy and a reaction to growing up and feeling trapped in Los Angeles. “There is no escaping this city. If you’re born here, even if you move away, its impact is always brewing just below the surface.”

Seven Saturdays was recorded, produced and mixed by Haskell and Daniel Farris (St. Vincent, The Black Pill) in the shadowy confines of downtown Los Angeles.

Nuclear Energy a Dangerous Source of Energy
By Derrick O’Toole

Nuclear energy has been considered by many to be one of the most important developments of the 20th century. Ever since the first reactor opened in the USSR on June 27, 1954, it has been providing the world more and more power until today when nuclear energy provides up to sixteen percent of the worlds electricity. [1] However a growing portion of the world population has started to see the many negatives to nuclear power and the dangers, which accompany it. These include but are not limited too; nuclear accidents such as Chernobyl and Three Mile Island, Nuclear Waste, and the obvious Military uses of nuclear technology. For these reasons and more, nuclear energy is dangerous and should not be widespread energy source.

Currently worldwide there are 438 nuclear reactors along with more than 150 naval vessels using nuclear propulsion systems. [2] With all these institutions working everyday without incident, its sometimes easy to forget about nuclear incidents such as the Chernobyl disaster which occurred in the Soviet Union on April 26th 1986 or the Three Mile Island incident which occurred at Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station in Pennsylvania on March 28, 1979. Both major events have brought to light the possibility for nuclear energy to harm not only those within the vicinity but also those far from the epicenter. In the case of the Chernobyl Disaster between 100,000 to 200,000 people have been affected directly health wise by the disaster with over 400 people having died so far from expose to radioactive materials released when the plant exploded. [3]

Another important reason why nuclear energy is dangerous is the massive amounts of radioactive waste produced. Waste is placed into three categories depending on the half-life for it to loose its radioactive properties and the severity of the wastes radioactive exposure. Each year nuclear reactors, processing plants and research facilities worldwide produce about 200,000 m3 of low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste, and about 10,000 m3 of high-level waste.[4] All this waste is stored around the world in a variety of temporary and permanent locations. These locations although now sealed may within the radioactive wastes half life (up to 100,000 years) become leaky which may in the future cause health and environmental concerns.

Possibly the most important reason why nuclear energy is dangerous, is the growing number of countries who have access to nuclear technology which also increases the number of countries with the ability to militarize said technology. Currently there are eight countries with declared nuclear weapons programs: The United States, Russia, The United Kingdom, France, Russia, China, India, Pakistan and North Korea. Furthermore South Africa had a program but had all their weapons dismantled and it has been long suspected that Israel has a program.  The problem with more countries becoming nuclear weapon states, is the growing number of people who have the knowledge and equipment to build nuclear weapons for other nations, rogue forces or even terrorist organizations.  Case in point is the story of Abdul Qadeer Khan who is considered the father of Pakistan’s nuclear weapon program. Abdul Qadeer Khan was found to be providing information and equipment used in enriching uranium for nuclear weapon purposes  to various countries including Iran, North Korea and Libya. Also several of Abdul Qadeer Khan top staff were arrested in 2001 for connection to terrorist organizations including the Taliban from Afghanistan and Al Qaeda.

Nuclear energy although able to provide the world with a growing amount of energy, is in fact quite dangerous to persons and the environment.  With its spotted tract record of accidents, its large amount of deadly radioactive waste, and usage in the creation of weapons of mass destruction, nuclear energy is dangerous and should not be widespread energy source.

the Conan Show

I felt so bad for Conan 8 months ago when he got ousted but luckily hes now on cable tv on tbs. I just watched his new show "the conan show" and gotta says its not bad at all. Its barebones but thoes bones are pretty funny. He had seth rogan on as his first guest and his laugh alone however weird it was made the episode for me a success. I look forward to seeing more of what Coco can bring to my tv

Call of duty?

So last night Call of duty Black Ops came out and several of my friends wanted to go to the midnight release. Although im extremely poor i decided id go along with them, and to our surprise when we got their at 1230 expecting the line to be shorter..there were still at least 300 people still waiting outside Best Buy. Now i went to the Halo Reach Launch Party and thought it was big with 150 or so people waiting but apparently there were close to 400 people out front. absolutely incredible if you ask me.

Animation Dommination

Watching the new simpsons and the best game mentioned is battle boat, but i very much so like the jumanji reference. Over the past couple years ive gotten back into the simpsons and it really seems that up untill almost last year the quality was severely dropping, however in my opinion recent episodes have been almost up to the quality of those back in the simpsons best times seasons 8-12.

Riding the lockness

If ever you try to ride a lockness monster you will quickly find out that it is not an easy thing. You have to deal with all the deadly barbs and its monstrous roar which has been know to shatter bones, but other than that its quite easy. Plus they like to go underwater suddenly and unless you have scuba gear on your shit out of luck

How to train my dragon

Watching How to train your dragon with the family. Overall its a pretty sick movie, ive already seen it but im watching it again and right now, am at the part when hick up is going through the book of dragons and i gotta say their are a lot of pretty sick dragons mentioned in the book but are not otherwise seen. Im very excited for the sequel when we might be able to see these amazing more powerful dragons come alive from the pages. Defiantly a movie to see and a Derrick Pick
