Well it’s that time again although today's a bit unorthodox. I just finished watching Last Train Home, a documentary about the largest yearly human migration on the planet. It takes place in China every year during the Chinese New Year in which 130 million people travel home to be with their families. I actually watched three quarters of the film during the break and for whatever reason had to stop watching and I just managed to finish it today.
Last Train Home has good parts and really average parts. The film follows one family over the span of several years as the two parents and eventually their eldest daughter annually head home to celebrate the new year with the rest of the family, and the trials and tribulations which are associated with this monumental journey. The overall exposure of the yearly frustration that clogs China's transit systems is fascinating yet horrifying, with tens of thousands of people sometimes jammed into train terminals waiting for hours or even days for their train home.
I was slack jawed at some of the horrendous conditions the Chinese working class must suffer through just to head home on packed trains with long hours and endless noise. The fact that everyone has black hair and looks similar affected me more than I thought it would. Last Train Home just followed this one family but we know there are 130 million other people who also suffer to be with their loved ones.
I kinda wish that we could of explored more of the transit problems and possibly some back ground information and not followed the family as much, but overall not to shabby at all.
